(313) 555-1234The 10-Step Cleaning Process
Our cleaning protocol exceeds industry standards. Each stage builds on the previous one to ensure thorough decontamination and restoration, regardless of what the tote previously contained. Here is our complete process from intake to certification.
Intake & Content Classification
All residual contents are safely drained and classified using Safety Data Sheets (SDS), visual inspection, pH testing, and odor analysis. We document the previous contents, assess the level of contamination, and determine the appropriate cleaning protocol — standard industrial, food-grade, pharmaceutical-grade, or intensive decontamination.
Pre-Cleaning Inspection
Before cleaning begins, we inspect the container for structural issues that could affect the cleaning process or indicate the tote isn't suitable for reuse. Cracks, severe bottle deformation, cage failures, and irreparable damage are identified now to prevent wasting cleaning resources on non-viable containers.
First Rinse — Hot Water Flush
The interior is flushed with hot water at 140-160 degrees Fahrenheit under pressure to dissolve and remove the bulk of residual material. This first pass eliminates the majority of contaminants and begins to break down any sticky or viscous residues clinging to the bottle walls. Water is reclaimed through our closed-loop system.
Second Rinse — Detergent Wash
An industrial-strength, biodegradable detergent solution is circulated through the container at high pressure. Specialized rotating spray heads ensure 360-degree coverage of all interior surfaces. This stage targets stubborn residues, staining, biological films, and chemical traces that survived the hot water flush.
Third Rinse — Purified Water Rinse
A final rinse with purified water removes all detergent traces and any remaining contaminants. For food-grade applications, this rinse uses water that meets potable standards, ensuring zero chemical residue remains inside the container. pH testing confirms neutrality before proceeding.
Food-Grade Sanitization (When Required)
For totes destined for food-contact use, a fourth stage applies FDA-approved sanitizing agents at the proper concentration and contact time. This step eliminates bacteria, mold, and pathogens to levels that meet food safety standards. Concentration levels are verified with test strips before and after application.
High-Pressure Exterior Wash
The exterior surfaces, steel cage, valve assembly, and pallet base are cleaned with a 3,000 PSI pressure washer. Labels, adhesive residue, dirt, grease, and surface contamination are blasted away. The cage is inspected for rust and treated with rust inhibitor as needed.
Component Inspection & Replacement
Valves, gaskets, caps, and fittings are inspected individually. Worn, leaking, or hardened components are replaced with new OEM-spec parts. This is also when cage straightening, minor weld repairs, and pallet board replacements occur if needed.
Drying & Climate-Controlled Storage
Cleaned containers are air-dried in our climate-controlled drying bay to prevent bacterial growth, water spotting, and contamination between cleaning and delivery. Drying time varies from 2-8 hours depending on ambient conditions and the cleaning protocol used.
Final 10-Point Inspection & Certification
Every cleaned tote undergoes our comprehensive 10-point inspection before receiving our Certification for Reuse. Only containers that pass all 10 checkpoints are certified. Failed containers are re-cleaned or redirected to recycling. Your certification documents the cleaning protocol, inspection results, and approved use classification.

After
Multi-stage validated cleaning completed. Residue testing confirms levels below validated acceptance criteria. Batch record documentation completed. cGMP-compatible cleaning validation report issued. Pharmaceutical-grade certified.
Component Refurbishing
Cleaning is only half the equation. We replace worn components and repair minor damage to extend the functional life of every container. Refurbished totes perform like new at a fraction of the replacement cost.
Valve Replacement
Worn, leaking, or stiff butterfly and ball valves are replaced with new, matching OEM-spec valves. We stock 2-inch and 3-inch valves in butterfly, ball, and cam-lock configurations for fast turnaround. Typical cost: $15-30 per valve depending on type.
Gasket Replacement
Cap gaskets, lid gaskets, and valve seat gaskets are inspected and replaced if they show any signs of cracking, hardening, compression set, or chemical degradation. New gaskets ensure a proper seal and prevent leaks during filling, transport, and storage. Typical cost: $3-8 per gasket.
Cage Straightening
Minor cage bends and dents are corrected using hydraulic straightening tools. This restores stackability, maintains structural support for the bottle, and improves the container's overall appearance and grade. Severely damaged cages are assessed for replacement or recycling.
Label & Adhesive Removal
All previous labels, barcodes, hazard diamonds, and adhesive residue are completely removed using a combination of heat, biodegradable solvent, and scraping. Clean exterior surfaces prevent confusion about contents and improve professional appearance for resale.
Pallet Repair & Replacement
Cracked, rotted, or missing pallet boards are replaced with new lumber. Loose nails are secured. Forklift entry is verified on all four sides. For containers going to food-grade applications, heat-treated (ISPM-15 compliant) pallet lumber is used.
Cage Rust Treatment
Surface rust on steel cages is treated with wire brushing, rust converter, and protective coating to prevent further corrosion. This extends cage life significantly and improves appearance. Heavily rusted cages may be assessed for recycling rather than treatment.

Water Treatment & Utilities
Cleaning for containers used in municipal water treatment, wastewater treatment, and utility operations. Containers that held treatment chemicals (chlorine, alum, polymer) receive appropriate cleaning protocols and certification for continued use in water treatment applications.
Environmental Responsibility
Our cleaning operations are designed to minimize water consumption, manage wastewater responsibly, use biodegradable cleaning agents wherever possible, and maximize energy efficiency. Cleaning and reusing containers is inherently more sustainable than manufacturing new ones — and we make the cleaning process itself as green as possible.
Water Conservation (Closed-Loop System)
Our closed-loop water system reclaims and filters rinse water for reuse in initial flush stages. We use approximately 15 gallons of fresh water per tote — compared to the 2,000+ gallons required to manufacture a new one. That's a 99%+ water savings per container.
Wastewater Treatment
All process wastewater is collected, treated on-site through our multi-stage treatment system (settling, filtration, chemical neutralization) to meet local discharge standards. We maintain discharge permits and monitor water quality with regular laboratory testing.
Biodegradable Cleaning Agents
Our cleaning detergents and sanitizers are selected for both effectiveness and environmental profile. We use biodegradable formulations that break down rapidly and don't persist in waterways. FDA-approved sanitizers for food-grade work are chosen for both efficacy and minimal environmental impact.
Energy Efficiency
Hot water for cleaning is generated using high-efficiency commercial heaters. Our drying bays use ambient airflow supplemented by low-energy fans rather than heat-intensive forced-air dryers. LED lighting throughout the cleaning facility. We continuously evaluate energy use for optimization opportunities.
Carbon Footprint Comparison
Cleaning and reusing an IBC tote generates approximately 5-10 kg of CO2 equivalent. Manufacturing a new IBC tote generates approximately 120 kg of CO2 equivalent. That's a 90-95% carbon reduction per container through reuse versus replacement.

Cleaning FAQ
Can you clean totes that held hazardous chemicals?
Yes, with prior notification. We need to know the specific chemicals involved (SDS sheets are helpful) so we can use the appropriate cleaning protocol and PPE. Some hazardous residues can be cleaned on-site; others require our TSDF partners for residue disposal before the container can be cleaned and recertified.
How do I know the cleaning actually worked?
Every cleaned tote passes our 10-point inspection, which includes visual inspection, pH testing, and odor verification. For food-grade work, sanitizer concentration is verified with test strips. For pharmaceutical applications, residue testing is performed against validated acceptance criteria. Your certification documents all test results.
Can any used tote be cleaned to food-grade?
No. Only Grade A totes with verified food-safe previous-use histories qualify for food-grade certification. Containers that held non-food-compatible chemicals, even after cleaning, cannot be certified for food use. This is a safety requirement — we never compromise on food-grade eligibility.
What if the cleaning doesn't remove all staining?
Some staining, particularly from dyes, inks, and certain chemicals, can permanently discolor the HDPE bottle. In these cases, the container is structurally clean and safe to reuse, but the cosmetic staining remains. We downgrade the visual grade accordingly and note the staining in the certification. Staining does not affect container functionality.
Do you pick up and deliver for cleaning-only orders?
Yes. We can pick up your dirty totes, clean them at our facility, and deliver them back to you — all coordinated as a single service. Transport costs are quoted separately. For recurring cleaning needs, our swap program delivers clean totes and picks up dirty ones on the same visit.
How fast can you turn around a rush order?
Same-day cleaning is available for orders within our SE Michigan core zone, subject to capacity. Rush service adds a 50% premium to the per-unit cleaning cost. For rush orders, please call us directly — the fastest way to get on the schedule is a phone call rather than an email or form submission.
Can you clean totes I bought elsewhere?
Absolutely. Our cleaning services are available to anyone, regardless of where the containers were purchased. You don't need to buy totes from us to use our cleaning services. We clean containers for businesses across the region who source their totes from various suppliers.
What certifications do your cleaning agents carry?
Our standard industrial detergents are NSF-registered and biodegradable. Our food-grade sanitizers are FDA-approved (21 CFR 178.1010) for use on food-contact surfaces. All cleaning agents carry SDS documentation, which we provide upon request for your records.
